Tartan of Redlands cocktails

When you step into Tartan of Redlands, you’re not just entering a restaurant—you’re discovering a destination where Scottish heritage meets California craftsmanship in every glass. The bar program here has become legendary among locals and visitors alike, offering an impressive selection of signature cocktails that showcase both creativity and respect for tradition.

Whether you’re a whisky purist or an adventurous cocktail enthusiast, the drink menu at Tartan promises something extraordinary. Let me walk you through the must-try libations that have made this establishment a beloved gathering spot in the Inland Empire.

The Highland Mule: A Scottish Twist on a Classic

The Highland Mule reimagines the beloved Moscow Mule with a distinctly Scottish accent. This refreshing concoction features smooth Scotch whisky instead of vodka, paired with zesty ginger beer, fresh lime juice, and a whisper of elderflower liqueur. Served in a traditional copper mug with a sprig of fresh mint, it’s the perfect introduction to how Tartan bridges old-world flavors with contemporary mixology.

What makes this drink special is the careful balance—the smokiness of the Scotch never overpowers the bright ginger and citrus notes, creating a surprisingly approachable cocktail even for those who might typically shy away from whisky-forward drinks.

The Bonnie Lass: Floral and Feminine

Don’t let the delicate appearance of The Bonnie Lass fool you—this cocktail packs both flavor and sophistication. Built on a foundation of premium gin, this drink incorporates lavender syrup, fresh lemon, and a float of Prosecco that adds effervescence and elegance.

The lavender isn’t overwhelming; instead, it whispers through each sip, complemented by the botanical complexity of the gin. The Prosecco lift transforms what could be a simple sour into something celebratory and refined. It’s the ideal choice for those warm California evenings on Tartan’s patio.

The Braveheart Old Fashioned: Bold and Unapologetic

For those who appreciate the timeless elegance of an Old Fashioned, Tartan’s Braveheart version delivers a masterclass in execution. This isn’t your grandfather’s Old Fashioned—though he’d certainly approve. The bartenders here use a carefully selected single malt Scotch, sweetened with a house-made honey syrup infused with orange peel and warming spices.

A dash of aromatic bitters and a flamed orange twist complete the experience. The result is a cocktail that honors tradition while introducing subtle innovations that make it memorable. Each sip reveals new layers, from the initial sweetness to the lingering smoky finish.

The Thistle Berry Smash: Fresh and Vibrant

Seasonal cocktails have their place, and The Thistle Berry Smash celebrates California’s incredible produce. This muddled masterpiece combines fresh blackberries, raspberries, and blueberries with Scottish gin, lemon juice, and a touch of simple syrup. Fresh basil leaves add an unexpected herbaceous note that elevates the entire composition.

The drink arrives beautifully presented, with whole berries suspended throughout and a generous basil crown. It’s simultaneously tart, sweet, and refreshing—a testament to the bar team’s commitment to using peak-season ingredients.

The Heather Honey Bee: Sweet Sophistication

Scotland’s famous heather honey takes center stage in this bourbon-based beauty. The Heather Honey Bee blends smooth bourbon with fresh lemon juice and heather honey syrup, then tops it with a gentle foam created from egg white. The presentation alone makes it Instagram-worthy, but the taste is what keeps people coming back.

The honey provides a luxurious mouthfeel and natural sweetness that never becomes cloying, while the bourbon’s caramel notes create perfect harmony. A light dusting of bee pollen garnish adds visual appeal and a subtle floral essence.

The Loch Ness: Mysterious and Mesmerizing

Perhaps the most theatrical drink on the menu, The Loch Ness arrives shrouded in dry ice fog, creating an atmospheric presentation that captures everyone’s attention. Beneath the drama lies a carefully crafted cocktail featuring vodka, blue curaçao, pineapple juice, and coconut cream, finished with a splash of Sprite for effervescence.

The vibrant blue color—reminiscent of Scotland’s deepest lochs—makes this a favorite for special occasions and celebrations. Despite its showy presentation, the flavor profile is well-balanced, tropical, and dangerously easy to drink.

The Scottish Sunset: A Visual and Flavorful Journey

Timing your visit to catch happy hour means you might experience The Scottish Sunset, a cocktail that lives up to its name. This layered masterpiece features rum, peach schnapps, orange juice, and grenadine, creating a gradient effect that mimics a spectacular sunset over the Highlands.

Beyond its beauty, the drink offers a fruit-forward profile that’s approachable and refreshing—perfect for unwinding after a long day or starting a memorable evening with friends.

Pro Tips for Your Visit

The bartenders at Tartan are passionate about their craft and genuinely enjoy discussing the drinks they create. Don’t hesitate to ask questions or request modifications based on your preferences. They’re happy to adjust sweetness levels, suggest alternatives if you’re not fond of particular spirits, or even create something off-menu if you’re feeling adventurous.

Pairing your cocktails with Tartan’s Scottish-inspired cuisine enhances the entire experience. The savory richness of their dishes—from fish and chips to shepherd’s pie—complements the complexity of these signature drinks beautifully.

If you’re new to whisky cocktails, express this to your bartender. They’ll guide you toward options that showcase the spirit’s versatility without overwhelming your palate, potentially opening up a whole new world of flavors you didn’t know you’d enjoy.

About the Restaurant

Tartan of Redlands is a beloved, historic steakhouse deeply rooted in the local community, celebrated for its Saturday prime rib ritual, extensive steak offerings, the iconic Redlands Tartan Burger, and a thoughtfully curated full bar. Established on April 15, 1964, the restaurant was founded by brothers Velmer, Al, and Art Ctoteau, who brought their shared dream to life in downtown Redlands.

Over time, stewardship of the restaurant transitioned to Larry Westin, who became a partner alongside the Ctoteau family and, together with his wife, led the business for many years until his passing in 2003. The legacy continued under Larry Westin Jr. until 2015, when ownership was passed to Jeff and Lisa Salamon.

A Boston native and proud U.S. Marine Corps veteran, Jeff Salamon has upheld the restaurant’s enduring character. Through decades of change, Tartan of Redlands has remained true to its classic, old-fashioned atmosphere and is fondly regarded as the “Cheers of Redlands,” a warm and familiar gathering place where guests are always welcomed like friends.
